Review: Huda Beauty Liquid Matte

Hello lovelies, it’s been soooo long since I last posted but I will definitely be uploading much more this year, starting with my thoughts on the Huda Beauty Liquid Matte lipsticks.

I ordered these from Harrods in the summer of last year the day they became available in the UK. These cost £18 each and whilst I usually like to buy as many shades as possible when it comes to liquid lipsticks, I narrowed it down to the colours I would actually wear so as to not break the bank. I figured if I like the formula I would try the other shades at a later date; but for now, here are my thoughts.

First off, I love the packaging for these lipsticks, it’s fun, original and in keeping with the style of packaging for Huda’s lashes; I’m sure you’ve all seen the endless Instagram videos of people using them.

The first thing I always do when I get a new lipstick is smell it, I don’t know why, I just do. These have a sweet smell to them which I personally like, but it’s not overpowering like the Kylie Jenner liquid lipsticks.

There are currently 16 shades to available but I warmed to three in particular; Trendsetter, Heartbreaker and Icon.

Before I applied the product, I exfoliated my lips and applied a balm for moisture. These apply very easily as the formula is quite slick. At first I didn’t think they would dry down given the way it applied but thankfully it did. I did not find that they applied streaky but I did have to dip into the bottle twice to get the coverage I wanted.

Once the product had dried down I found the colour became more intense and slightly darker, bringing it closer to the colour swatches that I saw online.

Usually I find that throughout the day liquid lipsticks tend to make my lips feel tight an uncomfortable due to the lack of moisture, but I didn’t experience that with these lipsticks. I’ve been wearing these a lot over the last six months and they’re so comfortable to wear. They don’t crack or peel during the day and they re-apply really well. They also don’t have a sticky or tacky feel to them, they really do dry down completely matte.

This is a deep, what I consider, mauve colour with a brown undertone to it. I really like this colour because it’s what I would deem to be a nude shade. To me this is quite a natural shade and I could wear this on a daily basis, which I actually do. The only downside is that the colour is not as advertised; the colour swatch online and on the box is a lot deeper than how the colour turned out on me. This could be because I have slightly darker skin, but the extent to how different it comes out makes me think this isn’t entirely the case.

I generally steer clear of pinks just because I don’t think they suit me, but Icon stood out to me because I haven’t come across a colour like it. I would say it was an orangey pink, if there’s such a thing, and I was quite intrigued and pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. This might be the only that actually turned out anywhere near what it looked like online.

If I’m trying liquid lipsticks from a brand that’s new to me I always buy their red shade. Sometimes I find it difficult to find a red that really suits my skin tone so I like to get my hands on as many as possible. I wouldn’t normally have high hopes for this shade because it has a slight blue undertone to it which generally wouldn’t suit me as I’m warm toned but the colour swatch online showed it to be a deep red which I wanted to try as I’ve always made the mistake of buying reds which were too bright and looked odd on me. Whilst the lipstick was as deep as the online swatch shows, I think I still like it. It’s still a deep-ish red and doesn’t look obscene so I will definitely be wearing it again.

So there you have it, I’m not sure yet if I would buy any of the other shades. Whilst I was happy with these three and the formula itself, the shades didn’t exactly meet my expectations as they weren’t really as pictured online. I don’t want to risk spending that much money if its not what I’m expecting. For anyone interested I would suggest swatching them in store; in the UK I believe the only store you can physically buy them from is Harrods.

Other than that, I really did like these lipsticks. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Love Always,

    • I wasn’t sure if it was because of my skin tone that it wouldn’t show up as deep but there was quite a difference. Still a good formula though xx
