My Current Base Routine

Hey beauties,

Today I wanted to do a post on my current base routine. I’m obsessed with trying to perfect my base because I think it sets the tone for your makeup look as a whole.

First off, skin care is the most important step in my opinion. I haven’t included my skincare routine in this post because I want to talk about it separately in a post that I will upload tomorrow.

After moisturising, the first step is to prime. The primer will allow the makeup to apply smoothly and last longer. Currently I’m using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Colour Correcting Blend to cancel out any pigmentation I have around my mouth and under my eyes. I also use the bareMinerals Prime Time primer in the centre of my face to fill any pores and blur any imperfections.

After letting the primer sit for a couple of minutes I then move on to foundation. My skin has been quite clear recently so I’ve been staying away from heavy or full coverage foundations, I’d rather let my skin show through but look brighter and more luminous. So, I’ve been using the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundations, probably my favourite lightweight foundation. Currently I’m having to mix shades 6.5 and 7.5 to get a reasonably perfect match. I tend to get oily around my T-zone area so after about 5 or 6 hours the foundation does break up slightly around my nose especially; however, I love this foundation and I don’t normally wear my makeup for long periods of time so I’m ok with it. If I was attending an event or I knew my makeup had to last all day then of course I’d reach for a more suitable foundation given my skin tendencies.

Normally I would just use a Beauty Blender to apply my foundation but recently I’ve been using a dense flat top brush to stipple the product onto my skin and then I go in with my Beauty Blender to ensure everything is blended. I’ve found this method gives me a really smooth finish.

To conceal under my eyes I’ve been using the LA Girl Pro Concealer in Medium Beige  because it shows up slightly orange on my skin making it perfect for cancelling out my dark circles. I only use a small amount and use my Beauty Blender to blend it into the skin. I then go in with the Maybelline Instant Anti-Age Eraser Eye in the shade Nude. I apply this under the area I concealed, in the areas that I want to be highlighted and then blend it in with the Beauty Blender. Then I go in with the Kat von D Lock It setting powder to avoid creasing and to set the highlighted areas.

It’s not necessary to cream contour everyday, I only tend to do it if the main event is my skin and not on my eyelids. I’ve found that if I cream contour, it looks more natural and I can really blend it in; powder can sometimes look patchy on my cheeks. I only cream contour my cheeks because I don’t want to add excessive amounts of texture by layering products on smaller areas such as my nose – I’ll just use powder in these areas. I also set the areas I cream contoured with a powder. The products I’m currently using are the Laura Mercier cream contour kit and the Benefit Hoola powder because it has a slightly grey undertone, perfect for sculpting.

Once I’ve finished with the cream products I set the whole face with just a light layer of the Kat von D Lock It setting powder using a fluffy powder brush. I especially focus on the areas I tend to get oily. I first use patting motions so the makeup underneath doesn’t move around. Then I like to use buffing motions on my cheeks so the contour doesn’t look too harsh.

Then I apply a teeny bit of blush just above the cheekbones to add a little colour to the cheeks. I’ve gone back to using the MAC blush in Sunbasque – I haven’t used it in a while and I forgot how much I loved it.

Lastly I like to add a subtle glow to my skin so I use a small amount of product from the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in Sun Dipped. I only use enough to give my skin a slight sheen; any more and it would make my skin look really textured which I don’t want for a flawless, ‘natural’ looking base.

And that’s it. It seems like a lot but I try to use only a small amount of each product where it’s required just to get my skin looking the way I want.

Love Always,
